This is a real session, replayed word for word — a grade 3 question about a snail, played by us rather than by a child, and Archie asking instead of telling.
Replay — a real session, word for word
Grade 3
“Flying on Ice” — the snail question
Picked for: what does “like being a snail” mean?
TappedHe moves in a crooked line
ArchieYou picked ‘crooked line’. But right before that phrase, his blades go scritch scritch scritch, not swish swish. Is a scritch scritch sound a fast sound or a slow sound? What does that tell you about a snail?
Taps “Find it in the story” · re-reads paragraph 16 · earns half a leaf back
TappedHe skates very slowly.
ArchieYou read that closely. Good.

Three things, in the order they happen.
A card for your child, half an hour of practice, and a page where you see how it is going.
- 1 / 3
A card, not an account
An explorer card — a short code and a colour — from the teacher, or from us if your family is testing Archie. It opens their Archie and carries no name; there is nowhere to type one.
- 2 / 3
Thirty minutes of practice
A real passage, questions about it, and when a pick is wrong, a question back that points at the paragraph. The tree grows as the reading gets better, not as the clock runs.
- 3 / 3
You see how it is going
The family view opens with a parent code, from the teacher or from us if your family is testing Archie. It shows the skills they are working on, the quests they have finished, and how often they come back from a wrong answer. Not every answer — that line is drawn on purpose.
The six things parents ask.
One open at a time. Tap a question to read its answer; the underlined words explain themselves.
Reads a real passage — the same texts New York publishes from its own reading tests — and answers questions about it. When a pick is wrong, Archie doesn’t mark it and move on; it points back at the paragraph and asks a question the child can only answer by reading. That is what SocraticTeaching by asking. Archie never states the answer; it names what a wrong pick shows, points at the paragraph that settles it, and asks a question the child can only answer by reading. means here. Progress is a journey map: a tree that grows from its roots in grade 3, a constellation that fills in grade 4.
Your child never chats with Archie — they tap their answers. Archie’s hints come from a closed system we built: some are written for the moment, the rest are lines our own program puts together, and every one is checked automatically before your child sees it. Nothing a child does is used to train anything. Tapping is a design decision, not a limitation: what a child does not type cannot carry anything personal. Nothing in the product rewards a longer session.
No. Sit with them for the first session. It never explains a whole passage; it asks. The teaching still happens between you and them — Archie makes the reading the place it happens. It knows nothing about your child beyond their grade and what they have got right and wrong; it cannot tell that today was hard, and it has no view about what kind of reader they are becoming. Those are yours.
It can’t.
Archie has no homework box and no chat box. Your child taps an answer, and when it is wrong, Archie asks a question back.
And it is not a matter of instruction: every response is compared against the recorded correct answer before your child sees it. One that contains the answer does not ship.
A child’s record has no field for their name. When Archie needs a fresh hint, what leaves our system about your child is the choice they made and any they set aside, their grade, how much help Archie has already given on that question, which of Archie’s forms they have reached and whether they have shields left — never their name. The part describing what your child did is first scrubbed for anything personal by the Privacy ShieldOur own software, running on our own servers, that takes names, identifiers and contact details out of what a child or teacher contributes before any of it leaves our system. If it fails or runs out of time, nothing is sent; if it is unsure whether something is personal, it removes it. on our own servers. If the scrubbing fails, nothing is sent. Every hint request is logged: what was removed, counted by kind, never the words themselves.
If their teacher builds a plan for them, their progress as numbers, their reading level, their home language and the supports the school has planned go too, as categories. The teacher’s own words are scrubbed the same way. The child privacy notice lists all of it.
No ads, no trackers, no third-party scripts. We build to Education Law §2-dNew York’s student data privacy law. It limits what a school’s vendors may do with a child’s information and requires the school to publish it — we are one of those vendors, and we build to it., FERPAThe federal law that gives parents rights over their child’s education records — to see them, and to control who else does. and COPPAThe federal law for children under thirteen online. A service needs a parent’s verifiable consent before collecting a child’s information — which is why the age gate comes first here.. A family can ask for their child’s record to be deleted by writing to hello@bbplayland.com, and it is — from every table, verified, and the deletion itself logged. Our audit log keeps its entries, which hold no name and none of the words; the child privacy notice says for how long, and why.
the family viewThe page where a parent sees how their child is getting on — their skills, the quests they have finished, how often they come back from a wrong answer, and any plan their teacher has built and certified for them. Opened with a parent code from the teacher, or from bbplayland during the family test; nothing to sign up for. shows how they are getting on: the skills they are working on and how settled each one is, the quests they have finished, which Archie they have grown, how often they find their way back after a wrong answer, and roughly how long they played this week — and, if their teacher has built and certified a plan for them, that plan.
It does not show which questions they got wrong, or when they played. A report of every mistake would turn a coach into something that watches them, so the line is drawn there on purpose. It is practice, not a test: there is no test score, and no predicted one.
Your child’s teacher gives you a code — or we do, if your family is testing Archie with us. The code opens one child and nothing else, and there is no account to make.
There is no price yet, so there is nothing to pay or cancel. To stop, write to us — or ask your child’s teacher, if Archie came through school. Withdrawing consent signs your child out and their card stops opening Archie; nothing is deleted unless you ask.
Deleting is a separate request, and it is real: your child is removed from every table that holds them, that is checked, and the deletion itself is logged. The one exception is the nameless audit entries the child privacy notice describes.
To stop, or to delete
They keep what they make.
Three pieces of work the AI Literacy course asks for, and the child keeps every one.
01 · Plate 02
A wrong answer, caught
A child’s note on why a confident answer from a model was wrong for one question, and why that particular wrong answer.
02 · Plate 04
A working note
A child’s three-line record of what they used a tool for, and what they did themselves.
03 · Plate 05
A data map
A list of what a game app collects and why, drawn by a child.
